Saint-Basile-le-Grand has 17,053 residents as of the 2021 census and is part of La Vallée-du-Richelieu RCM. Incorporated as a municipality in 1871 and a town since 1969, it covers 36.9 km² between Mont Saint-Bruno and the Richelieu River. The Vieux-Village is organized around rue Principale and montée Robert, where the church was completed in 1877. Farther south, the train station stands at the corner of boulevard du Millénaire and boulevard Sir-Wilfrid-Laurier, near the Place de la gare shopping centre, and route 116 crosses the town.

Between the mountain and open land

Saint-Basile-le-Grand has two very different neighbours: the woods of Mont Saint-Bruno on one side, open land on the other. Both bring pests toward houses, but not the same ones, and not at the same time.

The most common pests in Saint-Basile-le-Grand

Mice. The most widespread problem. In the fall, mice leave open land and woods and look for the nearest foundation. The page on mice in the house explains how they get in.

Carpenter ants. Near the Mont Saint-Bruno woods, dead wood feeds colonies that then settle in damp outdoor wood. See the signs of a carpenter ant colony.

Wasps. Soffits, sheds and hedges host wasp and hornet nests from June to September, in old and new neighbourhoods alike.

Asian lady beetles. South-facing walls looking onto open areas get them in October: the page on Asian lady beetles describes the sealing to do in August.

Vieux-Village or newer neighbourhoods

  • Around rue Principale: older foundations and utility entries, worth inspecting for mice.
  • Near the station and route 116: newer houses, less rotten wood, but open land nearby where mice come from.
  • Along the woods: carpenter ants and, on trails, blacklegged ticks.

The local calendar

  • April to June: carpenter ants.
  • June to September: wasps.
  • September to November: mice and Asian lady beetles.

Frequently asked questions

Why mice every fall in Saint-Basile-le-Grand?

The town touches both Mont Saint-Bruno and open land. When nights cool and fields empty, mice look for shelter, and a gap of a few millimetres in a foundation is enough.

Are homes in the Vieux-Village more exposed?

Older houses around rue Principale often have more cracked joints and worn utility entries. The risk still depends mostly on the foundation's condition and what surrounds the house, not only its age.

Do the newer neighbourhoods near the station have pests?

Yes, but often different ones. New houses have little rotten wood, so fewer carpenter ants, but disturbed lots and nearby open land bring mice in the fall, and soffits host wasps in summer.

Who deals with a wasp nest on municipal land?

A nest in a park or on town property is the municipality's responsibility: report it to the Ville de Saint-Basile-le-Grand. On your property, you have it treated.

When should I seal against mice?

In late summer, before the first cold nights of September. Sealing after mice are in traps the ones already living in the walls.
