Vieux-Longueuil is the most populous borough of Longueuil, with 141,794 residents in the 2021 census. It holds the historic core around rue Saint-Charles, where the borough hall sits, the former town of LeMoyne, the Sacré-Cœur, Longueuil Est and Longueuil Ouest districts, and the only metro station on the South Shore, Longueuil–Université-de-Sherbrooke. Along chemin de Chambly, boulevard Jacques-Cartier or boulevard Roland-Therrien, a single building can house a dozen households, and an unreported problem in one quickly becomes the neighbours’ problem.

By contrast, the streets of houses near Parc Michel-Chartrand and the Boisé du Tremblay look more like the suburbs: mature trees, exterior wood and yards that back onto woods.

Mice. Older buildings have foundations and utility entries that have had time to crack. Mice come in during the fall and then travel inside shared walls.

Rats. Dense commercial areas, dumpsters and the edges of autoroute René-Lévesque along the river give Norway rats food and shelter.

Carpenter ants. Less common here than elsewhere on the South Shore, they mostly turn up in houses bordering wooded areas, where stumps and dead wood are close by.
