Vieux-Longueuil is the most populous borough of Longueuil, with 141,794 residents in the 2021 census. It holds the historic core around rue Saint-Charles, where the borough hall sits, the former town of LeMoyne, the Sacré-Cœur, Longueuil Est and Longueuil Ouest districts, and the only metro station on the South Shore, Longueuil–Université-de-Sherbrooke. That density changes the kind of pest problems found here compared with the rest of the South Shore.

A borough of rental housing

Where Saint-Hubert and Brossard are mostly single-family homes, Vieux-Longueuil has many multiplexes, postwar walk-up apartment buildings and residential buildings around the metro station. Shared walls, ventilation ducts and common garbage rooms create routes that insects use to move from unit to unit. Along chemin de Chambly, boulevard Jacques-Cartier or boulevard Roland-Therrien, a single building can house a dozen households, and an unreported problem in one quickly becomes the neighbours’ problem.

By contrast, the streets of houses near Parc Michel-Chartrand and the Boisé du Tremblay look more like the suburbs: mature trees, exterior wood and yards that back onto woods.

The most common pests in Vieux-Longueuil

Bed bugs. The rental stock and tenant turnover make them the borough’s signature problem. Furniture left on the sidewalk around July 1 plays a well-known role. See the bed bugs page for preparation and the two treatment methods.

Cockroaches. German cockroaches depend entirely on a building’s heat and food. In a multiplex they move from kitchen to kitchen through ducts. Treating a single unit often fails: the cockroaches page explains why.

Mice. Older buildings have foundations and utility entries that have had time to crack. Mice come in during the fall and then travel inside shared walls.

Rats. Dense commercial areas, dumpsters and the edges of autoroute René-Lévesque along the river give Norway rats food and shelter.

Carpenter ants. Less common here than elsewhere on the South Shore, they mostly turn up in houses bordering wooded areas, where stumps and dead wood are close by.

The local calendar

  • June and July: peak of bed bug reports, with moving day and travel.
  • July to September: wasp nests under the balconies and outdoor stairs of multiplexes.
  • September to November: mice getting into older buildings.
  • All year: cockroaches and bed bugs, which follow heating and people rather than the seasons.

Requesting service in Vieux-Longueuil

Vieux-Longueuil is part of the Longueuil agglomeration zone. The quote request for Longueuil opens with the town already selected. No response time is guaranteed: for a building, state the number of units and whether neighbours have reported the same problem, since that changes the method and the price. Observed price ranges are on the pest control prices page.

Before any work in an apartment, insist on a written quote that lists the units to be inspected, and ask to see the technician’s CD5 certificate. The neighbouring towns of Saint-Hubert and Boucherville have their own profiles on the service area page.

Frequently asked questions

Why are bed bugs so common in Vieux-Longueuil?

The borough holds a large share of the city's rental housing: multiplexes, apartment buildings and residential buildings near the metro station. Bed bugs move from unit to unit through shared walls, and tenant turnover keeps furniture travelling. It is a matter of density, not cleanliness.

My neighbour has cockroaches. Should I worry?

In a multiplex, yes. German cockroaches travel through ducts, pipes and outlets between units. Notify the landlord right away: the inspection should cover the units on each side, above and below.

Do Parc Michel-Chartrand and the Boisé du Tremblay attract pests?

Large wooded areas mostly favour carpenter ants and, in tall grass and undergrowth, ticks. For houses next to them, keeping firewood away from the foundation and clearing vegetation around the yard reduces the risk.

How long does it take to deal with bed bugs in a Longueuil apartment?

Several weeks: two or three spaced visits for a residual treatment, or one day for a heat treatment followed by a check. The timeline depends mostly on how many units in the building are affected.

Who pays for pest control in a rental building?

In Quebec, the landlord must keep units in good habitable condition, and the tenant must notify the landlord promptly. In a building where several units are affected, treatment in practice falls to the owner. The Tribunal administratif du logement can be involved if there is a disagreement.
