Bed bug exterminator in Longueuil

In Vieux-Longueuil, a bed bug infestation rarely involves just one apartment. The multiplexes and apartment buildings around rue Saint-Charles, chemin de Chambly and the Longueuil–Université-de-Sherbrooke metro station share walls, ducts and hallways: effective treatment is planned for the whole building, not a single unit.

Why Vieux-Longueuil is hit harder

The borough holds a large share of Longueuil’s rental housing. Three factors add up here: shared walls in multiplexes, which let bed bugs travel along ducts and outlets; tenant turnover, which keeps mattresses, couches and boxes moving; and the metro, which brings a daily flow of bags and luggage. None of these has anything to do with cleanliness.

In LeMoyne as around boulevard Jacques-Cartier, the same pattern repeats: an infestation reported late in one apartment becomes a whole floor’s problem.

July 1, a risky moment

In Quebec, a large share of leases end on June 30. In the days that follow, furniture left on Vieux-Longueuil sidewalks ends up in other apartments. Two simple precautions make a big difference:

  • when leaving an infested unit, wrap and label discarded furniture, and tell both the next tenant and the landlord;
  • when moving in, inspect the apartment before bringing furniture in: carpet edges, baseboards, outlets, bed frames left behind.

Treatment designed for the building

The general protocol is on the bed bugs page: inspection, preparation, residual or heat treatment, encasements and follow-up. In a multiplex, three things are added:

  1. Inspecting adjacent units, above, below and on each side, even without a complaint.
  2. Coordinating preparation: one tenant who does not prepare compromises the neighbours’ treatment.
  3. A shared follow-up schedule, so check visits happen in every affected unit.

Heat treatment is often easier to coordinate because it takes a single day. Residual treatment needs several spaced visits, and therefore cooperation lasting a few weeks.

Tenants and landlords

Article 1910 of the Civil Code of Québec requires the landlord to keep the dwelling in good habitable condition. The tenant must notify the landlord promptly and help with preparation. In practice, the building gets treated and the bill follows the owner. A disagreement can go to the Tribunal administratif du logement.

Frequently asked questions

My upstairs neighbours have bed bugs. Will I get them?

The risk is real in a multiplex, because bed bugs travel along pipes, outlets and baseboards. Put interceptors under your bed legs now and notify the landlord: a preventive inspection of your unit costs far less than a treatment.

The landlord only wants to treat my apartment. Is that enough?

Rarely in an apartment building. If neighbouring units are not inspected, surviving bed bugs come back through the walls. Ask that the quote list which units will be inspected, above, below and on each side.

I picked up furniture from the sidewalk on July 1. What now?

Do not bring it in before inspecting it closely: seams, joints, underneath, back. Salvaged upholstered furniture and mattresses are the most common source of new infestations around moving day. When in doubt, leave it outside.

How much does treating an apartment in Longueuil cost?

Ranges published for Greater Montreal run from about 350 to 850 dollars for a residual treatment over several visits, and from 530 to 1,587 dollars for a heat treatment. In a multiplex, the number of units inspected often moves the total more.
