Asian lady beetle control in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu

In Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Asian lady beetles follow a precise geography. The sectors merged in 2001, Saint-Luc, L'Acadie, Saint-Athanase and Iberville, surround the city with farmland (terres agricoles). At the end of summer the beetles leave those fields for the nearest light-coloured, sunny walls, and houses on the edge of the farmland take the brunt of the gathering.

The first row of houses

When Asian lady beetles leave the fields in the fall, they do not scatter at random. They look for light, warm, highly visible surfaces and usually stop at the first buildings that fit. In Saint-Luc, L’Acadie or Saint-Athanase, those buildings are often the houses facing the farmland.

Two houses on the same street can therefore have very different falls: the one looking onto the field, with a south- or west-facing wall, and the one sheltered by other houses.

Iberville, downtown and the river

On the Iberville side and downtown, near the Richelieu River and the canal de Chambly, pressure is generally lower because the fields are farther away. Older buildings do have more gaps, though: a single exposed wall can be enough to let many beetles into an attic.

The local calendar

  • August: the best time to seal and, if justified, for a preventive wall treatment.
  • September and October: gatherings on sunny walls, especially on mild afternoons after a cold night.
  • November to March: the beetles overwinter in walls and the attic; some reappear indoors during thaws.
  • April and May: they try to get out, often through the inside, which reveals the entry points to seal.

What a service call should cover

The general method is on the Asian lady beetles page. For a house next to farmland, the quote should detail:

  1. The exposed walls facing south and west, and access at height.
  2. Sealing of window frames, soffits, vents and cable entries.
  3. Why the timing is right if an exterior treatment is proposed: done too late, it rarely helps.
  4. Indoor advice: a vacuum with a disposable bag, light traps in the attic if needed.

The same sectors also see mice arrive after harvest: one good sealing job helps against both. The city’s full profile is on the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu page, and the quote request opens with the town already selected. Available price ranges are on the pricing page.

Quebec's Pesticide Management Code (MELCCFP) regulates pesticide use, including outdoors; many municipalities add their own rules. A CD5 certificate is required of anyone who applies or offers to apply a pesticide in pest management.

Frequently asked questions

My house in Saint-Luc faces a field. Is that why I have so many?

Very likely. Asian lady beetles gather on the most visible, sunniest buildings near their summer habitat. A light-coloured wall facing south or west, across from cultivated fields, ticks every box.

Why do neighbours downtown have fewer?

Downtown, near rue Richelieu, buildings are surrounded by other buildings and farther from the fields. The beetles generally stop at the first row of houses they meet when leaving the farmland.

When should I get sealing done in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu?

Before the end of September, ideally in August. Gatherings start with the first cold nights of fall; once the beetles are inside the walls, sealing only keeps the next ones out.

Is an exterior treatment in October worth it?

Rarely. A wall treatment only helps just before the gathering. By October the beetles are already in: a vacuum indoors and sealing for next year work better.
